Goosebuds

Welcome to Goosebuds! A podcast where your hosts Paul Ritchey, Chad Quandt, and Kevin Cole dig into the Young Adult Literature of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine and give these tomes the deep critique and respect they deserve. Sometimes they get too scared and cover other adjacent 90s books and culture instead. Come join us and re-discover the stories you grew up with or jump in for the first time.

This is it, podcast collectors: the mint first-edition issue of Goosebuds RPG. Paul, Dom, and Chad join Game Master Kevin Cole (@RealKevinCole) for a custom tabletop adventure set in the Goosebumps-ish universe. Will the boys be able to survive a nightmare world of apple cider sucking children and corrupt able companies?

Normal episodes of Goosebuds will return after this miniseries! But let us know if you dig this experiment and want to hear more.

Do not adjust your RSS feed-- this is indeed Goosebuds. In this new side format the boys (Paul, Dom, and Chad) are joined by friend, editor, and game designer Kevin Cole (@RealKevinCole) to play a custom version of his tabletop-card-RPG, simply called Goosebuds RPG. The boys will take on Goosebumps horrors playing as their own teenage selves, with only fate and lucky cards keeping them alive.

The actual adventure begins in Issue #1, but this episode will familiarize yourself with the "Space Kings" gameplay system as well as entertain you while the boys look inwards which doubles as emotional therapy.

Normal episodes of Goosebuds will return right after this! Let us know if you want to hear more RPG adventures!

The Goosebud Boys Paul, Dom, and Chad are joined by the wonderful Elspeth Eastman (Cadence of Hyrule, League of Legends, Twitch) to read The Headless Ghost, a story about two kids ruining a local historical house and tourist spot. Learn the tragic tale of a sailor, his lost love, and ripping heads off kids.

OTHER TOPICS: Elspeth in the world of Hyrule and things she would tell Link, Dominic gets a new ally in the campaign to voice Mario, Chad's patented hiccup cure, and Elspeth's favorite Goosebumps.

Paul, Dom, and Chad tackle a legendary Goosebumps sequel with The Haunted Mask II, chronicling the history of The Shopkeeper, his unloved masks, and the horror of aging. Nothing is worse than growing old and until science defeats the Grim Reaper this will be the scariest book. Enjoy.

OTHER TOPICS: Our experimental surgeries, and the curse of Mr. Six Flags.

Paul, Dom, and Chad discuss the mantis-monster story Shocker on Shock Street, about an amusement park with technology far exceeding anything a modern-day Imagineer could come up with. The Shock Street movie series is not only the biggest horror franchise around, it covers all genres and tones: werewolf men, houses with flimsy electrical wiring, skeleton monorails. Pick a lane, movie producers! Enjoy.

OTHER TOPICS: Meatloaf's biggest secret, the problem with having too many friends, capturing your nudes in new mediums, Christmas Milk

Prepare to get your hands dirty, Goosebuddies; we're doing some gardening! And who better to help us in our war against our war-crime-committing neighbor than sentient ceramic gnomes? Well, they're actually just two tiny men who pretend to be statues and hang out in your backyard which is unintentionally way more terrifying than R.L. intended. But the book is fertile ground for discussion and jokes.

OTHER TOPICS: Chad, Paul  and Dom discuss 90s movie marathons, kids talking too much during movies, and the Buds' individual weapon load-outs for the upcoming Future War.

Seal up your space suit; we're launching into a new Adventure! episode-- Space Vampire!!! (We added those exclamations to the book title, but how can you not get excited when solar suckers are in play?) Dom reads this tale to Paul & Chad, who do their best to be young space hot shot 'Osprey' and take down a space vampire (different than terran vampires?) who hunts for human blood for some sinister, space-conquering purpose. Will the boys survive their monster hunt? Can their humanity? #ChadLeftGodForVampires

OTHER TOPICS: Our yearly pilgrimage to Yoshi's Island, Vector Man The Garbage Man, hidden secrets of writing for cartoons, and an update on Dom's campaign to be Mario.

Ooooh howdy the quality of this episode's book is divisive as figuring out where to plant your Identity Seeds. We dive into one of Chad's favorite titles in the original series-- Calling All Creeps-- and talk about the R.L.'s darkest payoff for teenage pranks, our hero Ricky the Butt Monkey, and which of us are secretly lizard people. This book gave us wonderful jumping off points for discussion and we're very happy you voted on us jumping ahead to this tale of pre-pubescent pod people. Enjoy!

OTHER TOPICS: A new media format for the show, Hit Clips, Chad's recurring Gremlins nightmare, and early signs of Jordan Peele's new role as Master of Horror.

The Goosebuddies are joined by the great Kevin Cole (Pretend Friends, Haque, Original Characters), who isn't just a great dude and game designer, he's the editor of this show! Kevin brings a stack of notes, and all our dark audio secrets. In this episode the boys cover Ghost Camp. Will the "All Camp Books Are Superior" Theory hold up after this tale of prankster spirits and child violence?

Other topics: Tips for your morning, The Gentle Barn, Legends of the Hidden Temple fears, food-colored popcorn, secrets of Teen Wolf, and emotional Beast Wars.

We've covered mummy books on this show before, but not one set in the eternally-1940s world of Indiana Jones! In this special Adventure! episode Dom reads a choose-your-own-adventure written by our beloved R.L! Can Paul & Chad decipher Mr. Stine's subtle hints and pick the right random branching storyline? Will we make Indy proud of us? Is this story's similar plot to Goosebumps' Curse of the Mummy's Tomb merely a coincidence? Or is it just hard to come up with new plots about mummy tombs?

TOPICS: Beach Boys' vs The Muppets' Kokomo, TGIF, The Good Elvis, and a big amount of Stine/Scholastic legal scuttlebutt (totally not slander)

To prepare our hearts and minds for the arrival of spring, we're reading about sentient evil eggs. Chad, Dom, and Paul cover the later Bumps book-- chosen by you: Egg Monsters From Mars! In this upside down world where kids love eggs and spend their weekends hunting for them one kid befriends a bizarre yolk-being and spends the bulk of the adventure trapped in a freezer. Of course we take some stabs at fixing this tale of horror huevos. Enjoy!

RANT TOPICS: 1993's Nemesis, the benefits of a Thinner curse, pigs with guns, A Wolf of Wall Street AirBnB,

We finally did it-- we broke the chronological timeline of Goosebumps books. Voted on by you wonderful supporters, we've jumped ahead to the Willy Wonka wannabe The Beast From The East! In this Calvinball of a book the rules change constantly while the tension remains a consistent 'boring'. What a cruel splash of reality R.L. has for us after Jellyjam. Either way the boys love talking about these monstrous blue teddy bears and we hope you enjoy the episode.

RANT TOPICS: Chad's Kickstarter Karma Scheme and Jesus' desire for groveling.

Back when this podcast started and the boys hit the first great wall of bad writing, Chad begged Paul & Dom: just wait for Camp Jellyjam. Years later we've finally reached this bizarre and great book and we can now turn into skeletons and die now that our purpose has been achieved. Or I guess we can just keep reading kids books and sharing goofs. This book is a refreshing read for the boys so enjoy this tale with minimal prank cliffhangers and genuine youth horror.

TOPICS: A call to action for reviews, winning our jeans, the sex-evolution of the Pillsbury Doughboy, communicating your baby status, the old handheld era hardships, kids love slime, sex crimes at gamer camp, and marrying Grimace.

Hey Goosebuddies! Chad has recovered from his freak piano accident- all three titans of teen tomes are here! The boys cover the infamous title The Barking Ghost, and the book's bark is definitely worse than its bite? Does that metaphor make sense?

TOPICS: Secretly Shaq, Time Traveling for Better Videogames, Snowglobes, Fear of Dogs, Shitty Little Brothers Part XII, and Isolated Homes in the Woods.

The 'Buds are back in the 'Bump saddle again!! We're back to discussing Goosebumps... well, two of us are. Chad was involved in horrible accident, so Dom & Paul review two episodes of the Goosebumps TV show that are adaptations from the Tales to Give You Goosebumps series with a haunted house theme! We cover The House of No Return and The Haunted House Game. Through them we explore the darkness of Canadian television, Hitchcock's Guide to Directing Goosebumps, great Canadian child actors, The Canadian Glory Days (before 9/11), and which is the better show: Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark?

RANT BANTER: Our talented friend Chad and his recent interview on storytelling, Chad's horrible accident, more Unsolved Mysteries episodes Dom watched, and how one like can equal one-thousand prayers.

After our Infinity War-level teaser last episode the Goosebuds are back for another episode, with a fun teaser flavor of a new recurring show: I, R.L., where we share real-life things that are freaking us out. In this episode we settle on subliminal messaging and get real talk about the unseen forces that shift us around like pawns. Let us know what you think of it! We'll be back to reading books next episode.

RANT BANTER: The Disneyland Tiki Room, the teen sensation Tom Green, observational humor, buying Marc Maron's ghosts, Halloween slasher,' Runaway Train', Unsolved Mysteries because of course we do.

Getting pretty emotional in this episode description, Goosebuddies. This is our fiftieth episode. And what a fitting book to devour than the return of Slappy, R.L.'s own Mickey Mouse TM. It's also a fitting shame that this book is super boring! Gotta spice up this demonic dummy, book man! Paul's greatest fear is this wooden child and we can't figure out what Slappy's end game is-- succeeding in the entertainment industry as a ventriloquist act? Long term investments? Child slavery? Also Dom drops a cliffhanger in this episode that will chill you to your curly bone. Thank you for listening in on this audio adventure with us, fright friends.

RANT BANTER: Earth, Wind & Fire; Fall Out Boy's artistic value, Imagine Dragons' religious secret, Star Wars alien ethnicities, Oedipal complexes, and getting things straight and letting that sink in.

Welcome to another Adventure! episode where you are given the choice of opening two giant crates; one marked "Good Knight", the other "Evil Knight". In this obvious morality test, which will you choose? Also which one randomly becomes a Narnia adventure with very little actual knights? Paul is this episode's DM (Dom Moschitti) and takes Chad and Dom (non-DM, but also a DM) through this tale of multiple choice.

Opening banter: The boys develop the Goosebuds movie adapatation, badly recapping the 'IT group love scene', Trill Stine, and the California Lottery.

Put on some latex gloves, Goosebuddies, because it's time to do some kitchen cleaning! You'll find many lost treasures under the sink: hand soap refills you forgot you bought two years ago, a little rat family that just wants to be left alone, and maybe a troublesome sponge monster that has control over fate itself.

This is a weird book where a 'Grool' bonds itself to its victim, feasting off the bad luck it creates with a lot of Final Destination type situations (which really doesn't make sense in terms of its survival as a symbiote). We obviously go off on tangents immediately but if you'd like to skip the banter about Stephen King, erotic anime, and evangelical cartoons the actual book discussion starts at 21:13. Enjoy!

This is a particularly raunchy episode of Goosebuds, friends. Not sure why; maybe we're just all really hot and bothered by the idea of canned monsters. In this episode Chad, Dom, and Paul talk public event notification systems, cock socks (and cock mummies), daggerin' & dancin', Captain Stabbin', and the weird fetishes of Monster Blood. That's right; we discuss Chapter Three in 'The Chillogy' of goopy globs of giantism. Hope you enjoy.

This episode is ready to rip out of the mint-sealed box, Goosebuddies! In this Adventure! episode Dom leads Paul and Chad through the Give Yourself Goosebumps book: Toy Terror. Can the boys survive this toy factory and help these plastic people find independence? They also discuss The World Tree of Ska, Second Skin the horror documentary Second Skin, The Monty Hall "Problem", and cool Mac tattoos.

(Sorry about Samson the Bird in the background, guys. He just wants to be loved so badly. - Chad)
Apr 19, 2018

Set down the book, Goosebuddies because this time we're turning on the boob tube. Dom, Paul, and Chad watch two "classic" episodes of the Goosebumps TV series. First, "Don't Wake Mummy", a pretty mundane tale of a scaredy boy and his sister whose archaeologist mother commits mail fraud and brings a real ancient pharaoh into their basement. And worst of all; he may become a real, living murderer! As opposed to a zombie one.

Up next is the show-exclusive "Click" which so clearly inspired the Adam Sandler emotional comedy. Watch as a boring kid buys a magic remote and only uses it to get the newspaper. Also the boys discover a secondary background TV show that is way more interesting than the episode we're watching.

We hope you enjoy our occasional dips into the silver screen of spooks!

DING DONG Goosebuddies! Chad, Dom, and Paul read The Cuckoo Clock of Doom; a time traveling horror story where the greatest fear is having your diaper changed by your mother. In this story a child reverses the bird on an antique wooden clock and is forced to relive his childhood in reverse, doing nothing to change his fate. Chad thinks this is the worst book yet while Paul loved it; so this is a real divider.

The boys also talk about George Romero's Monkey Shines, wheelchairs you blow into, a strange alternative satire called 'SFW', that dude who got his weiner cut off in the 90s, jackin 'em up, Jarhead movie sequels, and again cover the perfect way to get away with murder using time travel.

Feb 26, 2018

Your wish is granted Goosebuddies- it's a new Adventure! episode! Chad's your DM as he reads Dom & Paul a Give Yourself Goosebumps book: The Scream of the Evil Genie. But watch out because this carbonated conjurer is taking every wish very subjectively. And the kids are real dumb.

The boys also talk about which Muppet Baby was murdered, Unsolved Mysteries, and invent a new game based around a nationwide manhunt. Bonus: Enjoy the sound of Chad's bird Samson chirping all the way on the other side of his house!
