Goosebuds

Welcome to Goosebuds! A podcast where your hosts Paul Ritchey, Chad Quandt, and Kevin Cole dig into the Young Adult Literature of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine and give these tomes the deep critique and respect they deserve. Sometimes they get too scared and cover other adjacent 90s books and culture instead. Come join us and re-discover the stories you grew up with or jump in for the first time.

Hey Goosebuddies! Chad has recovered from his freak piano accident- all three titans of teen tomes are here! The boys cover the infamous title The Barking Ghost, and the book's bark is definitely worse than its bite? Does that metaphor make sense?

TOPICS: Secretly Shaq, Time Traveling for Better Videogames, Snowglobes, Fear of Dogs, Shitty Little Brothers Part XII, and Isolated Homes in the Woods.

The 'Buds are back in the 'Bump saddle again!! We're back to discussing Goosebumps... well, two of us are. Chad was involved in horrible accident, so Dom & Paul review two episodes of the Goosebumps TV show that are adaptations from the Tales to Give You Goosebumps series with a haunted house theme! We cover The House of No Return and The Haunted House Game. Through them we explore the darkness of Canadian television, Hitchcock's Guide to Directing Goosebumps, great Canadian child actors, The Canadian Glory Days (before 9/11), and which is the better show: Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark?

RANT BANTER: Our talented friend Chad and his recent interview on storytelling, Chad's horrible accident, more Unsolved Mysteries episodes Dom watched, and how one like can equal one-thousand prayers.

After our Infinity War-level teaser last episode the Goosebuds are back for another episode, with a fun teaser flavor of a new recurring show: I, R.L., where we share real-life things that are freaking us out. In this episode we settle on subliminal messaging and get real talk about the unseen forces that shift us around like pawns. Let us know what you think of it! We'll be back to reading books next episode.

RANT BANTER: The Disneyland Tiki Room, the teen sensation Tom Green, observational humor, buying Marc Maron's ghosts, Halloween slasher,' Runaway Train', Unsolved Mysteries because of course we do.

Getting pretty emotional in this episode description, Goosebuddies. This is our fiftieth episode. And what a fitting book to devour than the return of Slappy, R.L.'s own Mickey Mouse TM. It's also a fitting shame that this book is super boring! Gotta spice up this demonic dummy, book man! Paul's greatest fear is this wooden child and we can't figure out what Slappy's end game is-- succeeding in the entertainment industry as a ventriloquist act? Long term investments? Child slavery? Also Dom drops a cliffhanger in this episode that will chill you to your curly bone. Thank you for listening in on this audio adventure with us, fright friends.

RANT BANTER: Earth, Wind & Fire; Fall Out Boy's artistic value, Imagine Dragons' religious secret, Star Wars alien ethnicities, Oedipal complexes, and getting things straight and letting that sink in.

Welcome to another Adventure! episode where you are given the choice of opening two giant crates; one marked "Good Knight", the other "Evil Knight". In this obvious morality test, which will you choose? Also which one randomly becomes a Narnia adventure with very little actual knights? Paul is this episode's DM (Dom Moschitti) and takes Chad and Dom (non-DM, but also a DM) through this tale of multiple choice.

Opening banter: The boys develop the Goosebuds movie adapatation, badly recapping the 'IT group love scene', Trill Stine, and the California Lottery.

Put on some latex gloves, Goosebuddies, because it's time to do some kitchen cleaning! You'll find many lost treasures under the sink: hand soap refills you forgot you bought two years ago, a little rat family that just wants to be left alone, and maybe a troublesome sponge monster that has control over fate itself.

This is a weird book where a 'Grool' bonds itself to its victim, feasting off the bad luck it creates with a lot of Final Destination type situations (which really doesn't make sense in terms of its survival as a symbiote). We obviously go off on tangents immediately but if you'd like to skip the banter about Stephen King, erotic anime, and evangelical cartoons the actual book discussion starts at 21:13. Enjoy!

This is a particularly raunchy episode of Goosebuds, friends. Not sure why; maybe we're just all really hot and bothered by the idea of canned monsters. In this episode Chad, Dom, and Paul talk public event notification systems, cock socks (and cock mummies), daggerin' & dancin', Captain Stabbin', and the weird fetishes of Monster Blood. That's right; we discuss Chapter Three in 'The Chillogy' of goopy globs of giantism. Hope you enjoy.

This episode is ready to rip out of the mint-sealed box, Goosebuddies! In this Adventure! episode Dom leads Paul and Chad through the Give Yourself Goosebumps book: Toy Terror. Can the boys survive this toy factory and help these plastic people find independence? They also discuss The World Tree of Ska, Second Skin the horror documentary Second Skin, The Monty Hall "Problem", and cool Mac tattoos.

Set down the book, Goosebuddies because this time we're turning on the boob tube. Dom, Paul, and Chad watch two "classic" episodes of the Goosebumps TV series. First, "Don't Wake Mummy", a pretty mundane tale of a scaredy boy and his sister whose archaeologist mother commits mail fraud and brings a real ancient pharaoh into their basement. And worst of all; he may become a real, living murderer! As opposed to a zombie one.

Up next is the show-exclusive "Click" which so clearly inspired the Adam Sandler emotional comedy. Watch as a boring kid buys a magic remote and only uses it to get the newspaper. Also the boys discover a secondary background TV show that is way more interesting than the episode we're watching.

We hope you enjoy our occasional dips into the silver screen of spooks!

DING DONG Goosebuddies! Chad, Dom, and Paul read The Cuckoo Clock of Doom; a time traveling horror story where the greatest fear is having your diaper changed by your mother. In this story a child reverses the bird on an antique wooden clock and is forced to relive his childhood in reverse, doing nothing to change his fate. Chad thinks this is the worst book yet while Paul loved it; so this is a real divider.

The boys also talk about George Romero's Monkey Shines, wheelchairs you blow into, a strange alternative satire called 'SFW', that dude who got his weiner cut off in the 90s, jackin 'em up, Jarhead movie sequels, and again cover the perfect way to get away with murder using time travel.

Your wish is granted Goosebuddies- it's a new Adventure! episode! Chad's your DM as he reads Dom & Paul a Give Yourself Goosebumps book: The Scream of the Evil Genie. But watch out because this carbonated conjurer is taking every wish very subjectively. And the kids are real dumb.

The boys also talk about which Muppet Baby was murdered, Unsolved Mysteries, and invent a new game based around a nationwide manhunt. Bonus: Enjoy the sound of Chad's bird Samson chirping all the way on the other side of his house!

Happy holidays, Goosebuddies! It's a new year! Hopefully we're all still alive and the robots haven't taken us yet! Speaking of being alive... the boys have dug into a Goosebumps: Most Wanted tale about holiday undead (that really don't do much other than guilt trip ya). Preceded by an opening prologue that is the darkest thing RL has ever written, we read the tale of Kate Welles who just wants the lead in a play that would never be allowed on stage, let alone in high school. And Chad falls on his sword arguing that the production is a stealth Halloween story. There's sorta some playing around with the idea of "Christmas spirits" and a missed opportunity to play off A Christmas Carol, but otherwise this is a holiday book we guess.

Also the boys talk weird church experiences, eating communion bread for fun, and discovering the dark joy of Victorian Christmas cards. Enjoy the episode. Merry Slinksmas!

Note: Apologies for the weird audio on Chad, buddies. He had to record this in his parents' basement while visiting in Indiana and as we all know audio just sounds different in the midwest.
